Artist's Description

Sometimes the past exist in the present through traditions. Everything appears to be modernized and different but I believe if we look closer we can still see that it’s not the case.

I honestly feel traditions are important, it helps remind us of certain things but it has to be flexible enough to accompany necessary changes to drive us forward with the changing times.

When I was younger, I have always felt tragically left out. I am an outsider to Indonesia, where I was born, and definitely am not accepted as a genuine Chinese from the mainland. Then again, I’m not completely Australian either despite the passport. Saying that I’m Australian evokes further questioning of where I’m really from, saying that I’m Indonesian evokes their confusion that my skin is not as dark as native Indonesians, and so on and so on.

My culture and traditions have been jumbled up with that of different countries I have come in contact with and experienced throughout my life. Japanese, Korean, European, Indonesian, Chinese, Taiwanese, Cantonese, Singaporean, Malaysian, American, Canadian, Thai, Vietnamese, etc… It’s all carved within me, making me who I am.

Now I’m actually glad that I don’t completely fit in the mould of one tradition, country or culture. I can say that I am a true Asian in heritage and a citizen of the world. And you know what? I am damn proud of it!
