Airborne Grommet – Empire Park Skate Park, Newcastle, Australia
In both Surfing and Skateboarding a young rider is called a Grommet. This kid might have only been about 10 or 11 years old, but he was mad keen on skating and he was attacking the bowl whenever it was his turn to ride. This trick is called a front side aerial.
After I’d taken a bunch of shots of many of the skaters, I showed this Grommet what was one of the poorer quality shots I’d captured because I flicked through them very quickly. But when I was reviewing the whole photo shoot later on I found this better shot.

If It Moves, Shoot It – Tuesday 9/10/2012
I’ve got a few more shots of his skating plus a lot of great tricks the other riders were doing that I’ll upload in the next few weeks. I try not to upload the same subject all in a very long sequence of shots and vary the subject matter over days and weeks instead.
The shot was taken with a Canon 450D and a standard Canon 55 – 250 mm lens set at:
Exposure time: 1/2000 sec
ISO speed: ISO-400 (I don’t usually go above ISO-200 if possible, but I didn’t want to lose any shots due to inadequate lighting in this shadowy scene and I didn’t want to use the Flash all the time)
Exposure bias: -0.3 step
Focal length: 55 mm
