Artist's Description

“Smith Grind”

A skater performs a skateboarding trick called a Frontside Smith Grind on the small ledge in the street obstacle course at the Empire Park Skate Park at Bar Beach, in New South Wales.

The skater performs and “Ollie” where he hits the tail of his board hard against the ground while sliding his front foot up the board then pushing the nose of the board forward and down, enabling him and his skateboard to jump off the ground. While airborne, he starts to turn his shoulders a little bit so that he lands almost parallel to the cement block/ledge, pointing his front foot down below the riding surface and pushing down hard on his back foot to lock in the grind. While the back axle (or “truck”) grinds along the steel-capped edge of the cement block, the underside/rail of the board slides along just below that and his board points down to the ground at about 45 degrees. When the rider reaches the end of the obstacle or feels like he’s starting to fall off the grind or slow down too much, he does another “Ollie” to jump from the cement block/ledge back down onto the ground.
