London Trip 35mm: Instinctual photography/Beauty in the mundane

Having recently purchased an old Olympus Trip 35mm film camera I’m embarking on a journey to portray London as I see it as a Londoner every day. By this I mean trying to capturing the reality of the city and not just the famous landmarks or tourist hotspots. Using a small, compact film camera was actually quite liberating… in fact this was the reason I purchased it in the first place. For a start it is small and unassuming, unlike the SLR I normally carry around. This means I can firstly get away with not attracting the attention of any over-zealous security that will jump into action at the first sign of potential terrorist activity…or someone just taking a photo. However more important than that is the ability to carry it around in my hand at all times, this means I am ready to capture whatever moment of inspiration comes over me and be a lot more instinctual.

Following my instincts was the aim and turned out to be the liberating side of this purchase. It enables me to be quick, mobile, ready at all times and more importantly more careful…because you only get one take with a film camera and you don’t know whether it was successful until you develop those shots. This also meant I was moving on quickly, one shot then go… no ‘faffing’ about with angles, composition and light meters…what happens, happens…some mistakes are unhappy, others are happy…c’est la vie! No longer bogged down in the digital age of perfection, this is about the beauty of imperfection!

So here is the first instalment of what I’ve come up with, I call it ‘Beauty in the Mundane’ because ultimately these are photos of everyday scenes in London that have inspired me to push the button. Every one of these shots is a click-able link so feel free to leave comments on the individual piece if the mood takes you
