A Sad Promise

What a shit. He promised. He always promises though. He’s never not promised. In a way I suppose he’s never let me down. “It’s a long way for a ballgame boy. Perhaps for your birthday.” It’s okay, I told him, I didn’t really want to go to the game anyhow. Not really. He didn’t get it though. He almost promised not to.She wasn’t much better. How she’d ever pulled herself together for a Judge I’ll never know. I don’t know her. She drove him away, slowly killing herself with late nights and short sentences; what made me different was my age and nothing more. At some point I saw her die, and I remember being really sad with what she left behind.Did they love me at all? Was there even capacity for love within their hollow souls? Or mine?
