Artist's Description

Oil on 8″×11″ canvas
I was inspired to paint this when I saw a pencil drawing of costumes by Leon Bakst for the ballet Rites of Spring and so I painted this in oils. these are the colours I saw in my head. I’m not sure but I think she’s a maenad and running wild is what she does. Frantic, fanatic and female. Marching to the beat of her own drummer and her drummer must be Keith Moon not Bacchus.

In Greek mythology, maenads were the female followers of Dionysus (Bacchus in the Roman pantheon), and the most significant members of the Thiasus, the god’s retinue. Their name literally translates as “raving ones.” Often the maenads were portrayed as inspired by Dionysus into a state of ecstatic frenzy, through a combination of dancing and intoxication.
