Fear clawed her very skin. Though no red welts marked her, her soul screamed in the agony; writhed in the despair.

Instinctively, protectively, she covered her ears with shaking hands, pressing hard to lock the world out. She shut her eyes so tight that her face became a mask of creases and lines – each well etched and marking the numerous trials of her life.

Thus shut off from the outside world, she delved into herself; diving into a sea of turbulent emotions tossing her about, disorienting and confusing. In this sea of darkness she spied a tiny speck of red light – she’d always thought hope would be white or yellow, but this was definitely red. There was no mistaking the welling of hope which flared into life inside her.

Fear and despair, turned to anger and suddenly she was running. A few metres from the edge her eyes snapped open and she focused … on the azure sky, untainted and calm.

She flung herself off the edge, head raised to the infinite heavens, arms outstretched either side of her …. and she breathed.

At first she dipped a little, but gradually, released from the debilitating effects of her fear, she tentatively began to grasp control. She arched upward toward the sky. Her incline was at first slight but slowly became steeper and steeper, until she was soaring .

And her soul blossomed within her, gently unfurling itself like the flower at the first soft caress of the morning sunlight, to reveal the sweet treasure within.
