Artist's Description

St David’s Cathedral

Number of views as of 4th June 2018 = 580.

St David, the patron saint of Wales, was a bishop who founded a monastic community here in the 6th century.

In 1081, William the Conqueror visited St David’s to pray, and thus recognised it as a holy and respected place.

Building of the present cathedral began in 1181, but problems beset the new building. The new tower collapsed in 1220, and the cathedral suffered earthquake damage in 1247/48.

St David’s is Britain’s smallest city, with a population of just over 1600 people.

Adjoining the cathedral is the Bishop’s Palace, now a picturesque ruin.

Date: 6th June 2012.
