East Looe

Number of views as of 7th February 2018 = 300.

A shot of East Looe (Cornwall, England) taken from the break-water at the mouth of the River Looe.

Looe is a historic, coastal resort and fishing port, the two halves of the town (East and West) being separated by the River Looe.

East Looe is the busier side of town, home to the fish market and the main shopping street.

Like many towns and villages along the Cornish coast, Looe has a smuggling past. The chief perpetrators were Fyn and Black Joan, a brother and sister team who are said to have hidden boxes and barrels in a secret cave and on St George’s Island (a small island just off shore from Looe).

Five and twenty ponies,
Trotting through the dark,
Brandy for the Parson, ’Baccy for the Clerk.
Laces for a lady; letters for a spy,
Watch the wall my darling while the Gentlemen go by.
(Extract from A Smuggler’s Song by Rudyard Kipling)

Date: 26th October 2011.
