Fishing boats St Rognvald (LH52) and Carrie B (LH29), moored at Newhaven harbour, on the firth of Forth, Edinburgh, Scotland.

St Rognvald (1136 – 1158) was one of the Earls of Orkney. The islands of Orkney, off the north coast of Scotland, were the centre of a powerful Norse Earldom which lasted from the ninth century to the thirteenth, and remained under Norwegian sovereignty right up until 1468. During this time the Earldom, which also included the Shetland Isles was ruled by a succession of men, some powerful, some weak, some good, and some bad. St Rognvald was murdered whilst out on a hunting expedition.

Date: 14th August 2008.
