The Twin Towers of All Souls College, Oxford, England.

All Souls, founded in 1438 is primarily an institution for academic research, with an emphasis on the humanities – history, law, the classics, literature, politics, philosophy and also economics, life sciences, mathematics and physics.

Surprisingly, All Souls has no students of its own. Its Fellows provide lectures, seminars, undergraduate tutorials and graduate supervision to students across Oxford University. The College is self-financing; its academic activities are funded by income from its endowment – i.e. financial and property investments – which also provide for maintenance of the historic buildings of All Souls.

This is another shot taken from the tower of St Mary’s University Church.

Did All Souls provide the inspiration for J.R.R.Tolkein’s Two Towers in the epic Lord of the Rings? Who knows, but certainly Tolkein was an Oxford University professor at nearby Merton college.

Date: 21st March 2009.
