One from the archives …

A shot of the beautiful Abbey Gardens, on the Island of Tresco, one of the Scilly Isles, 30 miles west of Cornwall, England.

The gardens were created by Augustus Smith, in the grounds of a ruined priory. By building tall wind-breaks, the weather was channelled up and over the network of walled enclosures built around the ruins, and the three terraces carved from the rocky, south facing slope.

Many of the plants here would stand no chance on the Cornish mainland, yet the garden is home to species from 80 countries, ranging from Brazil to New Zealand and Burma to South Africa.

The hotter, drier terraces at the top suit South African and Australian plants, those at the bottom provide the humidity that favours flora from New Zealand and South America.

August 2004.
