The Town Bridge, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, England.

The bridge crosses the ‘broad ford’ on the River Avon, which is the origin of the town’s name. There may have been a wooden or tree bridge over the ford in Saxon times but the first stone bridge was built by the Normans.

The small building on the left of the bridge was originally a chapel, but was later used as the town ‘lock up’, where mediaeval binge-drinkers and local troublemakers were left overnight to cool off.
