Stour Valley Way: Stur Bridge

Sturminster Newton, known to the locals as Stur, is a town in the Blackmore Vale area of Dorset, England.

The six-arched bridge over the river Stour dates from the 16th or 17th century and is still well used today, being the main route into the town from the south.

A sign on the bridge reads “Any person wilfully injuring any part of this County bridge will be guilty of felony and upon conviction liable to be transported for life”.

Sturminster Newton cattle market was until its demise in 1998 one of the largest is the country.
