The village of New Abbey (Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland) is dominated by the red sandstone ruins of the romantically named Sweetheart Abbey.

The Abbey was founded in 1273 AD by Devorgilla, the widow of John Balliol, whose heart she had built into the Abbey walls.

Balliol was a wealthy man, owner of large estates in Scotland, England and France. He donated the students’ hostel at Oxford, which later became Balliol College.

Date: 24th August 2008.
