Captain Peacock!

Number of views as of 22nd March 2017 = 440.

I may of course be completely wrong, but I believe this is a Peacock Butterfly, which gets its name from the large and colourful “eyespots” on its wings. As you can see, this one is slightly imperfect, part of its wing appears to be missing.

According to Wikipedia, the Peacock can be found in woods, fields, meadows, pastures, parks, and gardens, and from lowlands up to 8,200 feet (2,500 m) elevation. It is a relatively common butterfly seen in many European parks and gardens.

Found this one on a canal towpath near Crinan, Argyll and Bute, Scotland.

Perhaps some enlightened lepidopterist (look it up!) can correct me if I’m wrong.

Date: 22nd August 2008.
