Deltic Diesel

The Deltics (also known as British Rail Class 55s) are a class of diesel locomotives built in 1961/62 by English Electric.

They were designed to haul high-speed express passenger services on the East Coast Main Line between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh.

Only 22 of them were built, just 6 of which are still running today including the locomotive pictured, D9002 (55 002), named for the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

D9002 is owned by the National Railway Museum in York, but is pictured here at Norden station on the Swanage Railway in Dorset.
