Artist's Description

Church of St Nicholas, Studland

Number of views as of 18th October 2016 = 900.

Only a few hundred metres from the much-loved sands of Studland Bay, stands the lovely Church of St Nicholas, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors and fisherman, in the village of Studland, Dorset, England. The church is of Norman origin, but probably replaced an earlier Anglo-Saxon building dating back 1300 years or more.

An unusual feature is the short, “squat” tower. According to my research, it was originally intended to build a much taller structure, but it could be that the foundations were not strong enough, and so the tower was “capped off” at its current height.

Date: 18th May 2008.
