St Aldhelm’s Chapel

Number of views as of 4th December 2017 = 880.

St Aldhelm’s Chapel is perched high on the cliff top, over a mile away from the nearest village of Worth Matravers on the Purbeck coast in Dorset.

The Chapel is named after St Aldhelm, a former Bishop of Sherborne, who died in AD 709, but the exact age & origins of the chapel are lost in time. Why the chapel was built in this location is also a mystery, perhaps to commemorate some maritime disaster.

The architecture is Norman in style, but the door could be Saxon. The chapel was restored in 1874.

Date: 13th April 2008.
