Artist's Description

Here I took a capture of the barns at Fintry Estate and I did some creative editing in Photoshop CS to come up with this result. Original Photo taken Mar.20/2008
This unique barn with it’s central silo, is the last known example of a polygonal (multi-sided) barn in British Columbia. It was built in 1924 and re-roofed in 2001 by the Friends Of Fintry, with help from the Canadian Millennium Partnership Program. The original shingles lasted 77 years. The barn itself is still in excellent shape.
After a disappointment with Hereford beef cattle, Dunn-waters turned to Ayrshires, the Scottish dairy cattle he remembered from his boyhood. Since he’d have only the finest animals, they had to have the best accommodation- this architect designed octagonal barn.
His herd won numerous awards for quality and quantity of milk. Producing cows were kept at the High Farm, part of the estate back in the hills where he also grew feed for his animals. Dunn-Waters herd supplied dairy products for his employees, neighbors and the elegant dining rooms on the CPR stern wheelers that regularly pulled in to the packing house wharf. After Dunn-Waters death, the Fairbridge farm students continued to raise and milk Ayrshires until their school closed in 1948.
On a side note there were numerous signs posted warning of bears in the area and although I did come across some fresh bear scat and paws prints I did not come in contact with this beast thankfully , although I do always carry bear spray with me just in case.
