Artist's Description

I had to visit a village in Fuia, Nadia, West Bengal, India, where handloom weaving was being done as a part of our college field visit. Spinning and weaving were the main sources of income for the locals.
The types of fabric produced included cotton, lots of silk, less of wool and very rare synthetic. Every house had two or three weaving hand looms. Also they had fabric and thread available for sale. This picture shows one such shop with loads of silk thread. It reminds me of past “Silk Route” studied in history, in which India also was a leading business centre. Till now the traditional silk weaving continues in numerous parts of the country.
