Artist's Description

The Ysleta Mission is located within the city of El Paso, Texas on tribal land belonging to the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and is one of three historic churches (along with the Socorro Mission and San Elizario Chapel) that comprise El Paso’s historic Mission Trail. The Ysleta Mission dates back to 1682 when it was built by Spanish colonizers using labor from the Tiwa and Piro indians following the Spaniards’ escape two years earlier from the Pueblo Revolt in northern New Mexico. Like its two sister churches on the Mission Trail, the Ysleta Mission has been damaged or destroyed on several occasions due to floods and fire, but each time it was rebuilt and it is now recognized as the oldest continuously operated parish in Texas.
