Bring It On

Born to be abandoned,
the shameful secret that may or may not
have scarred the soul of some young girl,
I found myself, when I could think,
locked in the wrong life.

Inheriting from who knows where
the love of music, books, and art
and all the history that goes into their making,
I was the piece that didn’t fit the frame
nor the framers of my life.

Those longs months of holy rotation
at the hands of brides of Christ made me willing:
anxious to please, not to be found wanting,
until I found my own true voice and could no longer
be beaten into silence.

My defiance earned me scarred knees and scorn,
yardsticks broken on the backs of legs,
but I found, somehow, enough coin of character
to pay the price required for freedom
and forged a steely determination to be me.

This meant, of course, I walked alone a path
with no hand to hold when I stood,
solitary,
buffeted by blue-edged winds,
in the howling wilderness of the world.

I stumbled and I fell,
hard and often,
but after decades of trial and error –
some grievous in the outcome –
still I stand, ready for more.
