saving the dove

he could lay her open with one look
the chill froze everything within his aura’s radius
her crime was the ability to read him like a book
it didn’t matter what page she perused

he could flay her open with his words
his hardened heart was evident in each clipped syllable
the scattershot of cruelty caused countless careless hurts
all offerings of sweetness were refused

he could slay the softness in her soul
except she would not let him crush that wild yet tender dove
she worked to keep her spirit free and whole
she chose to be not martyred, but amused
