Tectonics

There is no other elsewhere –
I read that once,
and like an arrow straight and true
it pierced my understanding.
Now I know it shall never come to be
that you and I will stand together
overlooking the same plain of endless beauty.
Your work is elsewhere,
mine is here,
with such rough tools as I can cobble
from this hodgepodge of my making.
Your world lies under mine,
a secret sullen place,
peopled with the daemons we deny
but feel just below our conscious waking.
And over that – a falsefront frosting glaze –
my universe sits lightly,
prettified with images both man- and woman-made
to keep us all from savoring
the barrel of that gun that we would swallow
in an instant if we knew the truth of ages.
Although we’ll never build that perfect heaven
lovers long for,
and you no doubt have found your consolation
in some other,
and I who search am hopeful that a healer
soon emergent
will show himself
and set about to soothe my ragged spirit
with oils of sweet transfiguration,
in spite of all,
the silver cord
throbs ever through the chasm.
