i dreamed of spring

the room was bare in its severity,
i had packed or tossed or given away much of what had been there,
yet i dreamed of spring.

i was alone on a frozen planet,
having wandered off my path in the darkness of my ignorance,
yet i dreamed of spring.

i felt the warming sun on my chill flesh,
the new grass tickled my unshod feet.
the scent of life renewed was everywhere
so i breathed deeply of it, hoping to take it home.

nothing had changed when i awoke,
the phone, silent as the grave of one long dead, was a reproach,
yet i had dreamed of spring.
