Vita Brevis

We live an hour or two and then are gone,
immortal though we feel from day to day,
taking for granted there will be a dawn
as in the arms of Morpheus we lay.
But Atropos is fickle with her shears,
no warning gives before their silver flash,
and when they do another disappears,
drawn into Death’s mysterious dark cache.
So live each day as though it be your last,
do always what you love and what you must,
for Time is fleet, you blink and it’s the past,
tomorrow is but wishfulness and dust.
Employ your hour on that which you love best,
before you’re captive in Death’s motley jest.
