Leonid Night

Much has been written
of the majesty of purple mountains,
their stateliness iconic.
But rare it is to glimpse them
blanketed in meteoric stars
such as the ones that glowed
that autumn night,
shooting glorious across the heavens.
Woven in among the clouds,
lit by the moon, they raced uncountable –
bright-tailed bits of cosmic dandruff –
all through the lion’s mane
until, at last, the show was over.
The sky returned to its accustomed stillness.
The mountains once more slept
in undisturbèd majesty.
