The Answer

It was deep into the wee small hours;
I found no rest.
Awakening again and again,
vague voices roamed my brain,
half-formed questions floated
in and out of consciousness.

In frustration I arose,
throwing off warm blankets,
standing naked in the winter chill
of my solitary chamber.

Wrapping in a robe
I padded through the unlit rooms, and,
knowing I would burn in the bitterness
of the black New England night,
stepped out.

The sky was washed with clouds
but off to the west I saw my Mother Moon.
Lifting my voice to the sky I called to her.

“Tell me – is it worth it?
Is the pain to bring reward
or only ashes of a promise?”

I waited, watching my frosty breath
dissolve and fade
just as well all do
in the end.

And then, not with my ears
but deep inside my frail being
I heard her voice,
my Mother Moon,
filtered through the warp and weft
of time and space
and my belief
in the true old ways of knowledge.

Just one word at first: “Yes.”
I waited, skin chilled to stone.
And then again: “Yes.”
Then silence.

I turned, thinking her wisdom finished.
And then it came,
resonating so that I trembled with its power:
“The answer is always YES.”

Now reassured, half-smiling in the dark,
I went back to my bed
and slept a sleep I had been needing
for a long long time.
