This Christmas greeting would have appealed to Victorians of all ages and classes, because it incorporates most of the design themes they admired – the lace, the flowers, the rich colors, the gilding and the large-patterned, William Morris Arts & Crafts-style wallpaper background.
The short, somewhat formal message would have been appropriate for almost anyone but the closest of family.
I suspect that this card would be appreciated by many today as well.
The amaryllis and its foliage is from an original photograph of a New York florist’s window, digitally painted and placed into the surrounding frame; the background pattern work is a manipulation of the painted flower panel.*
