Drinking You In
We went to the well too many times, perhaps,
and that glossed smooth all inhibitions,
but the spark was there and would have flamed
at some point nonetheless.
I have no clue what you thought of me then
or think of me now,
or if you ever do.
All I know is that for me you were an unexpected haven,
a blue oasis in the desert of these soul-sick months
in which to bathe my desiccated spirit.
I clung to you and felt my body blossom
in the fierce sweet rain of your attentions,
my skin hydrated by the urgent warmth you generously spread.
Perhaps for you this was no special decussation,
merely a variation of a dance you know so well
that it’s become a practiced casual pleasure.
For me it was the nourishment I needed to
reclaim my tattered vision and continue -
on to what or where or whom I do not know.
