dead in the water
spring’s come to the lake at last
i see water instead of ice
and though the trees aren’t leafed out
and the beach grass is still brown
it will soon be set right
the sun will see to that

but the sun can’t cure the lake
with the stony shallows you can’t see
the treacherously cold water
even after weeks of fair winds and summer heat

only a grizzly or some other creature
with plenty of padding and the strength of ten men
could enjoy immersion in that wintry womb
so silently deceptive
so beautifully blue
so frigid

if the lake were a person it would be the one
you can’t resist for all kinds of reasons
the one you undress for inside and out
the one you dive into without thinking
just because they’re so damn beautiful

but there’s no sun in that soul
no warmth in that heart
and sooner or later
too exhausted to move
you find yourself lying bruised and broken
turning blue in shallow water

The dawn sky is unpredictable – will the sun
shine? – in this early spring view of the shore
of Lake Superior in rural Minnesota. Reimagined
and painted from a photograph by Brian Coppola.
