Dawn’s story Part 4 of 5

“You know” she muses to no one in particular;
“I did not even want to marry the slob”.
“He swore he loved me”…”He said he will take care of me…”
“He said I was the world to him…”

With a vigorous shake of the head she stabs her eyelids shut and the tears flow again.
Red nosed she sniffs as if to breath the sorrow back in.
Suddenly she smiles, pushes against me playfully and treads her left arm trough mine while the other holds on in a tight cling.
“Treat me with a little kindness Ray”;
“Make me happy”;
“Just for today… let us do what we used to do”.

I smiled, happy to be useful.
The sun broke through the clouds and with a one armed hug I held her tightly as we strode towards my favorite restaurant.
I plucked jokes and stories out of the air; Bits of poems and funny quips. Words came out like fireflies on a hot night. They sparkled and twinkled as we walked into the sunset. Each time she giggled the more enamored I became of my precious charge.At the Restaurant’s door, I disengaged my arms and stepping forward, spun about, opening the glass-door and ushering the pretty lady inside with exaggerated formality.

I led her right into the arms of the Yanos, the owner, who peeled the coat off her shoulders before catching my own with a wink and a knowing smile.
She glowed with suppressed pleasure, and my heart sang with happiness.
Yanos knows which table I like best. He is just past my age and being Greek, adores women as if his life depended on it.
Sparse of hair and portly in girth, he indulges in his pleasure of fawning over a pretty lady.
Something I totally approve of; Something I cherish in him!

His dismisses my presence as he is wont to do in the company of beauty.
Then he leads Dawn in a flurry of excited words towards my table.
He deposits her in front of a chair he had drawn for her and gently slides it forward to seat her perfectly.
Beaming broadly he swipes a linen napkin expertly over her lap.
