Artist's Description

Gwen Butler – Galley-hand

Nikon D90 18-200mm VR lens ISO 800 f/4.5 1/40

Spent the day at Mannum in SA with my good friend Susan (a producer with the ABC Open – Riverland) “working” on the current National Portrait of a Stranger Project. As described on the ABC site the project ‘Portrait Of A Stranger invites you to take a series of portraits of strangers, and learn new social, photographic and technical skills.
In this project, you will need to find a willing subject; someone who is a stranger and who is happy to share their story. Capture your subject in a single photograph and short written piece of up to 200 words. Challenge yourself to talk to and photograph at least five strangers, and to find out a bit more about each person you meet.

It was a fascinating experience that took me out of my comfort zone, approaching strangers and asking them tell me their story and take their photograph. Very rewarding and interesting.

Gwen has been a volunteer galley hand on board “P.S. Marion”http://www.murrayriver.com.au/paddleboats/paddl... and she says it’s ‘an honour and lots a of fun’ spending time on board where she travels from her home in the Adelaide Hills. Pamela (the Purser) and Gwen have been friends since training together at teacher’s college, some 35 years ago, and it was Pamela who asked if Gwen would like to come help out on board one day and that was 6 years ago!
Whilst Gwen doesn’t spend a lot of time on the river, she remembers the 1956 floods when Mannum was under water and more recent times of drought where the River has not been low but is amazed to see how the river has changed in the last month to 6 weeks and is very happy to see the River flowing more freely again. She feels she has an affinity with the river though, having grown up in outback NSW near Wilcannia not far from the Darling area out of Broken Hill.
