Artist's Description

This is a photo from Nzulezu in western Ghana in July 2011. The village is completely constructed over a lake using stilts – the early villagers purposely designed their community that way in order to keep hidden from their persecutors.

In 2000, Nzulezu was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a major tourist attraction.

And no kidding – who doesn’t want to spend an evening on a floating village, eat fresh tilapia and drink “Akpeteshie,” a distilled liquor from palm wine similar to gin? Ok, you caught me – I drank a little too much the night I spent in this hidden village. The cool lake makes for the perfect swim to overcome a hangover.
