NIGTEVECHT

Nigtevecht is a village on the Vecht in the extreme northwest of the Dutch province of Utrecht, belonging to the municipality Stichtse Fight. The village has 1450 inhabitants 2004. Until 1989 it formed a separate congregation.

HISTORY

Nigtevecht was first mentioned in 1281. It was originally an elongated village on a river dune along the left bank of the winding river Vecht. Today it has a village center in a bend of the river. At this location Nigtevecht owes its name, it is a corruption of Niftervecht, on the Vecht. Near the village, but separated from it by the Amsterdam Rhine Canal and the boundary with the Round Fens, located at the Fort Nigtevecht. It is part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam and was built between 1888 and 1903.

The Velter Beating, the connection between Gein and Nigtevecht was after the construction of the Amsterdam Rhine Canal Merwedekanaal now broken. The short remaining piece in Nigtevecht has since been called Short Velter Spanking. There are plans for a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the Amsterdam Rhine Canal which Velter Hitting and the Short Velter Hitting back would be connected. This bridge would be a connecting link in the recreational path network forms but also the connection between Nigtevecht and Amsterdam Southeast and Abcoude shortening.

The main street of Nigtevecht is a conservation area. The Reformed Church of Nigtevecht dates from the 13th century. The Roman Catholics of Nigtevecht fall within the parish of the across the border province Fight also Nederhorst den Berg. A bicycle ferry maintains a connection between the two villages and is also a popular route. In Nigtevecht is a polder, the Garst Mill, an octagonal ground sailor from 1876. The Vreelandseweg the football DOB established, which is an abbreviation for Improved By Exercise. The club was founded in 1947.
