Facing Your Monsters

I remember
..long ago..
I was very small..

It had started
late one eve,
as leaves began to fall.

Papa tucked me
Kiss from mom
Then they switched the light

Though I implored..
Off they went..
And cared naught for my blight

Sly and impish
Slow he crept
Over to my bed

Under blankets
Though I knew
He saw inside my head

Then all went still
So I thought,
‘Face him eye-to-eye.’

With my courage
I jumped up
Yet, only to demise

He lunged at me!
In mid-air..
..snarling as he flew..

His pointed ears,
Long, bent nose,
And teeth were all I knew.

So we fought on
Pillows tore
Feathers all around

In vain, he reached
..I was first..
I pulled him to the ground

It was over
So I yelled,
‘Get out of my room!’

‘On the morrow..’
He just sneered,
‘is when you’ll meet thy doom.’

And this went on
Every night
I was losing sleep

He persisted
Ever still
To drag me to his keep.

And so I thought,
‘Must not be
Doing all I can..’

I’d had enough,
So that day
I came up with a plan.

When lights went out
I saw him
Leer behind the door..

So I proclaimed,
‘This is it..
Can’t take it anymore..’

‘Please understand,
This must cease!
You are quite the pest..’

‘So I will trade
’Teddy Bear’
For just a little rest..’

‘My loyal friend
..Secrets kept..
I give him to you..’

‘May this bear be
What you need
For all that you go through.’

And at that thought
Tears swelled up
As my monster winced.

He left right then
..with my bear..
And hasn’t been back since.
