True Compassion or Hidden Agenda

True Compassion or Hidden Agenda

A man kills another,
Could this be compassion?
What if he was motivated to protect the innocence of children from a recidivist monster
Does this make labeling him a murderer more difficult…

A new company chief executive puts an end to sweatshops in developing nations
Is this an exemplary example of compassion for the persons he liberated?
What if this decisive act destabilized numerous local economies placing thousands at risk of starvation
Does this make elevating him to the mantle of ethical leader more problematic…

Thousands of people work in developing third world nations year after year
Is such sacrifice deserving of collective community praise?
What if these international workers are receiving generous salary packages does this bring into question their purist motivations
Should the masses save the praise and accolades for the true volunteers who do not head overseas in search of six figure salaries

Australians line up year after year to donate millions of dollars to international charities
Does this typify compassion
Or does it beg the question why are the local charities that provide for our down trodden countrymen so readily overlooked
Could it be that people suffering from a mentally illness, substance abuse or are homeless are not considered as deserving

A woman helps her terminally ill husband, to die with some dignity
Is this an act of true compassion?
She is convicted for assisting a person to commit euthanasia
Does this maker her a villain or a saint

For me the term compassion has been prostituted and manipulated to fit situations and individuals who are not necessarily worthy of such an acolade,
When considering whether a person or an act is truly compassionate one must first consider their motivations and the flow on consequences to all involved,
It is healthy as a society that we collectively act to encourage and appropriately recognize true deeds of compassion
Many of the global issues facing humanity, such as war, famine and disease could be addressed more robustly if world leaders acted in the best interests of humanity and not just their constituents.
