Artist's Description

This image was shot with a Canon 30D DSLR camera body, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens, at the 31mm focal length. The aperture was f/13 with a 4.0 second exposure. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto tripod and pistol grip head were used with a remote shutter release cable.

Unlike last year, this St. Patrick’s day found no ice or snow surrounding Adams Falls in Ricketts Glen. In fact, the temperature on March 17th, 2012 was in the mid 70s, with crystal clear blue skies and no wind at all. My wife and I decided to do something green without spending a lot of green …so we visited Adams Falls to get the most out of this gorgeous spring day. We waited patiently, until the sun was just about ready to disappear behind the ridge, hoping to catch the “perfect light” for a few long exposure photos. For me, it was well worth the wait.

While we were there, one brave soul found the courage to jump from the steep ledge into the splash pool at the bottom of the falls. He quickly stripped down to his boxers and immediately launched himself out over deepest part of the stream. Unfortunately, I was setup for slow shutter speed photos and was unable to readjust my camera for an action shot. I took the photo anyway, but the jumper was a mere blur in my 5 second long exposure. The water was cold enough to get quite a loud reaction from the swimmer as he came back up to the surface. The people who saw his stunt cheered and applauded as he climbed back up the cliff. I’m sorry there is no picture to share, but it was fun to see.

Adams is the first waterfall at the very bottom of the gorge in Ricketts Glen, just down the hill from the Evergreen Parking Area in the State Park. It’s the only waterfall south of RT-118 in the Glen. In fact, it’s practically within “spittin’ distance” of the highway.

Ricketts Glen is located at the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in Fairmount Township, Pennsylvania, USA. This is about half way between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre, PA.
