Artist's Description

The Keefer Mill Covered Bridge was looking its best on this bright December afternoon. The bridge had recently received some new paint to cover the ugly “tags” and disgusting graffiti that had been sprayed all over it by a few disrespectful idiots over the years. This historic bridge still serves the community just as well as it did over 150 years ago. Modern cars and small trucks safely cross the Chillesquaque Creek here every day, just as their forefathers had done in their horse drawn buggies.

The historic “Keefer Mill Covered Bridge” was built in 1853 by William Butle and was named for George Keefer, who was the owner of the mill that supplied the lumber for this structure. The bridge crosses the Chillisquaque Creek between Washingtonville and Limestoneville in Mountour County, PA.
The Keefer Mill Covered Bridge is listed as Bridge No. 7 on the NRHP.

Directions: Take Pennsylvania Route 346 (Keefer Mill Road) off of Mexico Road, southwest of Washingtonville in Liberty Township, Montour County, Pennsylvania. It is found in the central region of Pennsylvania, USA, not far from Limestoneville exit on I-80. The bridge still provides a valuable public service, as it has always done since the 1850’s.

This is how the Keefer Mill bridge looked in February of 2011

The bridge was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1979. It was fully restored in July of 1983. Additional maintenance was done in the late summer of 2011, before the Irene flood hit the area. Fortunately, the high water in September did not cause any serious damage to the bridge.

The photo was shot hand-held with a Canon EOS 30D body, fitted with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L Zoom lens that was set to the 17mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/60th sec at f/8. The camera’s ISO was set to 100.
