After shooting all of the waterfalls on the “waterfall loop” of Ricketts Glen, I was on my way out of the woods. This rocky landmark is about 6 tenths of a mile away from the Lake Rose parking area, where my van was parked.
This photo was captured very late on October 18th, 2011, just before dark. It was taken with a Canon 30D DSLR, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens at the 17mm focal length. Manual exposure was used, the shutter speed was 8 full seconds, with an aperture of f/11. The camera’s ISO was set to 125. No filters were used for this shot, due to the very dim lighting conditions. The camera was mounted on a Manfrotto tripod, with a Manfrotto 222 Pistol Grip head. A remote shutter release cable was also used.
Highland Trail passes through a very narrow gap between the boulders that make up the “crevasse”. The evening air was dead still at this time, since the sun had already set. This site is a good distance away from any waterfalls, so it was perfectly quite here. It was really getting dark at this point, but the totally calm conditions allowed me to use a long eight second exposure to capture all of the subtle details of this unusual formation.
Through The Narrow Pass
This Midway Crevasse is found just past the half-way point on the Highland Trail, near the highest elevation in the Ricketts Glen wilderness area. Ricketts Glen State Park is located close to the small town of Red Rock, PA, at the junction of Pennsylvania State Routes 118 and 487. The park is about midway between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania, in the north eastern region of the USA.
