This is the Shawnee Waterfall, near the top of Glen Leigh in Ricketts Glen State Park. My current RedBubble avatar photo was taken at this site by photographer Mark Van Scyoc, during our hike here last fall. I know this landmark very well, it is one of nature’s amazing sites that truly means the most to me.

With only two waterfalls left to shoot on this trip, I spent a lot of precious remaining daylight time trying to capture the true “essence” of Shawnee Falls. It was getting very late, I knew I was risking having to finish the last couple miles of my hike in the dark. However, the light was so perfect here that I knew it might be my best opportunity to shoot my favorite photo of this place that I love so much.

This photo was captured on the evening of October 18th, 2011, well after sunset. It was taken with a Canon 30D DSLR, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens at the 24mm focal length. Manual exposure was used, the shutter speed was set to 3.2 seconds, with an aperture of f/18. The camera’s ISO was set to 125 (due a slip of the finger, I had intended it to be 100). A Circular Polarizing filter was used, (no ND filter for this shot, due to the low light conditions). The camera was mounted on a Manfrotto tripod, with a Manfrotto 222 Pistol Grip head. A remote shutter release cable was also used.

I hope you like this photo at least half as much as I was enjoying my totally solitary time there (It was so late that there wasn’t another soul around. I had the whole place to myself).

I have written a RedBubble Journal that explains exactly how I photograph waterfalls, titled “Some Tips for Better Waterfall Photos”.

Ricketts Glen is located near the small village of Red Rock, PA, at the junction of Pennsylvania State Routes 118 and 487. The park is about midway between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania, in the north eastern region of the USA.
