Artist's Description

The Conestoga waterfall in Ricketts Glen is quite beautiful, but difficult to photograph. The rushing water starts its lively decent behind a large boulder, then it immediately drops into a sharp “S” curve and ends by gushing out over twin spillways into the plunge pool.

The only time to see the entire path of the flow here is in early spring. Once the trees become flush with leaves, there is no way to see the entire waterfall from any one viewpoint. In summer and fall, there is so much foliage here that the waterfall can only be seen in bits and pieces. This is as close as I ever been able to get to capturing the entire path of Conestoga within a single frame.

This is the third named waterfall above the “Waters Meet” point, on the Ganoga Glen branch of Kitchen Creek in Ricketts Glen State Park.

This shot was captured during a hike through Ricketts Glen with photographer Mark Van Scyoc and his son.

This photograph was taken on Monday, April 25th, 2011 with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens on a Canon EOS 10D DSLR body. The aperture was f/16 with a shutter speed of 0.3 second. The lens was set to the 17mm focal length. The camera’s ISO setting was 100. A Manfrotto 550B tripod and 222 head were used. The image was processed in Photoshop CS2, using the Shadows & Highlights tool.

Ricketts Glen State Park is located at the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in Fairmount Township, Pennsylvania, USA. The nearest town is Red Rock, PA, about half way between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre, PA.
