Artist's Description

This is one of the most interesting stretches of the Ganoga Glen trail through Ricketts Glen. The narrow stone ledge in the foreground is an easy trek past Seneca Falls, most of the time. However, when Kevin Hart and I were here two months ago, this pathway was totally covered by solid ice, with a dangerous slope toward the falls. There were huge ice formations on the left canyon wall (where you can see the sharp stone outcroppings on the far left edge of the image). This had narrowed the path to just a few inches wide, with a nasty frozen drop off into the churning waters to the right.

That was the only time I questioned whether we had brought the right gear for our hike. We made it past this spot safely, but I know I will bring much better equipment on my next winter visit here. On this spring trip, there were no problems at all along the Seneca Falls section of trail.

This image was captured at Seneca Falls during a spring hike through Ricketts Glen with photographer Mark Van Scyoc and his son.

This photograph was shot on Monday, April 25th, 2011 with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens on a Canon EOS 10D DSLR body. The aperture was set to f/19 with a shutter speed of 0.3 seconds at the 17mm focal length. The camera’s ISO setting was 100.

Ricketts Glen State Park is located at the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in Fairmount Township, Pennsylvania, USA. The nearest town is Red Rock, PA, about half way between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre, PA.
