Artist's Description

Before continuing on to photograph the waterfalls in Ricketts Glen, I stopped at the Midway Crevasse landmark, along the Highland Trail. On this foggy October morning, the light was just right to reveal an interesting visual oddity that I had noticed and wanted to capture for many years.

If you examine this image carefully, I hope you will see the optical illusion that I had noticed a long time ago. Until this trip, I had been unable to capture it in a way that allowed my perception to be clear enough for others to easily recognize.

I see a silhouette of two strong male faces, seemingly involved in a heated confrontation. The men are positioned face to face. The square-jawed figure on the left could be a tough war-hardened soldier. He appears to be receiving very strict orders from the taller person on the right. To me, the man on the right looks a lot like President Thomas Jefferson.

…what do you see?

This photo was captured early on October 10th, 2013. It was taken with a Canon 5D DSLR, through a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens at the 22mm focal length. The shutter speed was 0.6 seconds, with an aperture of f/4.5. The ISO was set to 100. No filters were used for this shot, due to the dim morning light conditions. The camera was mounted on a Manfrotto tripod, with a Manfrotto 222 Pistol Grip head. A remote shutter release cable was also used.

Highland Trail passes through a very narrow gap between the boulders that make up the “crevasse”. The air was dead still with fog all around.

This landmark named “Midway Crevasse” is found just past the half-way point on the Highland Trail, near the highest elevation in the Ricketts Glen wilderness area. Ricketts Glen State Park is located close to the small town of Red Rock, PA, at the junction of Pennsylvania State Routes 118 and 487. The park is about midway between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania, in the north eastern region of the USA.
