Artist's Description

It is wonderful to be able to drive through the old Montandon / Rishel Covered Bridge again! This historic span had been closed since the fall of 2011. It was badly damaged by the terrible flood that followed hurricanes Irene and Lee in the Susquehanna River Valley of central Pennsylvania.

The bridge had been moved off of its original foundation and important structural timbers were damaged or completely washed away. The bridge had to be closed immediately after the flood because it was no longer safe to use.

Today, the bridge has a new deck, reinforced concrete buttresses, freshly paved ramps and a new coat of historically accurate red paint. There are strict restrictions limiting the maximum height of vehicles to 6’ 3" or less. Special steel barricades are installed in front of each entrance, to insure that trucks and vans that are too big cannot enter the bridge (or they will loose their roof). The barricades do detract from the beauty of the bridge, but their presence is necessary to protect this important landmark.

The Rishel Bridge was originally built by John Shriner and Zacheus Braley. It was constructed between 1825 and 1830. This bridge is located just east of Montandon, Pennsylvania on state RT-45 (just a few minutes from Lewisburg, PA). It can be found on Covered Bridge Road, where it crosses the Chillisquaque Creek. It is one of the oldest covered bridges in the United States.

The Montandon / Rishel Covered Bridge was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places on August 8, 1979. (Reference Number 79002310)
