Junk Wins By Default

A question I have been asked is , Why did you become an addict?

My answer is that I did not mean to become an addict. It’s not like I woke up one morning and decided that would be a fine day to become a junkie. First of all, it takes months of daily shooting to get a habit. And it took a few detoxes to really know what junk sickness was. It took me almost 6months to get my first habit and then the withdrawal wasn’t more then your typical cold. I find no exaggeration in saying that it takes a year to several hundred injections to make an addict.

The question I should have been asked was, Why did you ever try junk? or Why did you continue using it long enough to become an addict? I would then answer with slight embarrassment that I became an addict because I did not have strong motivations in any other direction.

Automatically, junk wins by default.

I started by drifting along taking shots when available. That’s how it happened. I didn’t start using for any particular reason. Then suddenly I woke up one morning and I was sick.
