Artist's Description

The construction of the monastery of Batalha started on 1402, to celebrate the battle of Aljubarrota (1385), winned by the Portuguse army against the Castillan army. The costruction of the never-ended chapels (Capelas Imperfeitas) started under the kingdom of Dom Duarte I, as a pantheon for the royal family, but was for ever stopped under the kingdom of Dom Joao IIII (1521-1557). The Capelas Imperfeitas are still an astonishing sample of Manueline Architecture.
