Artist's Description

Vande Mataram

The National song of India. The song was composed by Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay in a mixture of Bengali and Sanskrit. He wrote in a spontaneous session and first appeared in his book Anandamath, published in 1882 amid fears of a ban by British Raj.

Vande Mataram was the lightening inspiration for millions of Indians & martyrs for their resistance to the British raj. If the British rulers have ever feared of anything during their rule, which can overthrow them out of India – than any movement by a single individual – it ( the fear ) was Vande Mataram. She was ( & IS ) a every Indian’s voice. Individuals live short life but nations have a much longer life & purpose than anyone.

Unfortunately, minds of human are easily currupted – especially those who hold the power. Vande Mataram has her own fate. She’s the uncrowned queen of India. The time will come when she’ll awake. . . . . . . then we’ll have something different to tell for the future.

If it happens to decide someday that any word or phrase could inspire ( a single human or a society or a state or a nation or even the entire human race on this planet ) in the darknest times of life of person or a nation then you’ll hear Vande Mataram. She’s humming in your heart. You live with her, every moment. Only the way of expression is different.

She’s the second lifeline of every Indian in modern times, which has united them apart from the name of the RAM. Like him – the RAM, inspiartion of Vande Mataram cannot be banned or destroyed. It’s ( the inspiration ) eternal and divine.

After independence in 1947, Government of India had organized a flag committee to choose national flag of independent India and another committee to choose national anthem. Recommendations of these committees for the national flag & the anthem were never upheld and Vande Mataram was rejected on the grounds that the minorities in India opposed idol worship & felt offended by its depiction of the nation as Durga. Infact, those who are not living in India can find it difficult to understand how can be religious idol be depicted with a nation. For ages the Hindus have depicted India as a supreme form of this goddess, this belief flows in their veins for generations.

Vande Mataram could be the only popular national song in the world history which has been rejected the honor of national anthem just for some cheap political objectives.

1. The continuing popularity of Vande Mataram today is documented by the fact that in 2002 it was the voted the second most requested song by listeners on the BBC’s World Service radio. However, in the final ranking details, the origin was miscredited to a 1950’s film.

2. In 2003, ‏"BBC World Service": conducted an international poll to choose ten most famous songs of all time. Around 7000 songs were selected from all over the world. According to BBC, people from 155 countries/island voted. Vande Mataram was second in top 10 songs.

A small piece of this popular song I have tried to translate to make you feel the beauty and richness. Vande Mataram is not just a composition but an expression of love to the motherland that only can be experienced at the stage of self realization and I am sure that Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay had experienced the state of self realization when he composed this song as it reflects the true character of India.

Tvam Hi Durgaa Dasha Praharana Dhaarinim
Kamala Kamaladala Viharinim
Vani Vidhyadayinim. . .
Namaami Tvam

( You are the Goddess of Power Durga who hold powerful weapons in ten hands and destroyed the demon power in the war. You are the Delicate Power of Creation who glides through the delicate petals of impressions of creation ( termed as lotus which reflects the beauty of creation of this universe ). You are the Power of Expression in every living being. O Mother, I bow to thee! )

( Vande Mataram is not just a combination of TEXT arranged to present a poetic effort . The entire composition was sponteneously flown through the mind of Bankimchandra, at a spiritual state. The composition is belived to be ALIVE, hence I have used the same terminologies in grammer we use when we address any human being.

Especially the composition represents the Goddess Durga in the FORM of WORDS. )
