The Nodding or Musk Thistle has a reddish-purple flowerhead and prickly wings on the stem with very spiny leaves.

This nodding thistle was found in the restored prairie of the headwaters of the Kishwaukee River, a McHenry County Preservation site in Northeastern Illinois near the city of Woodstock. The restored prairie is meant to resemble the Illinois tallgrass prairie found prior to the introduction of farming in the midwestern United States. The thistle flower is just beginning to emerge as I visited the prairie in late Spring or early Summer (depending on what date you use to mark seasons.)

I processed the raw file using the Detail 3 filter from Topaz Labs to produce this image.

Images are available in matted, framed, canvas or mounted formats as well as greeting cards and posters at truly extraordinary pricing. Just click the Prints, Posters or Cards tab to explore all the formats available. The sample below is a framed print with a walnut frame and a black matte.
